Located just off the Martha Layne Collins Blue Grass Parkway, the charming town of Versailles in Kentucky is the beating heart of Woodford County. Surrounded by magnificent rolling farmlands and world-renowned bluegrass horse farms, Versailles offers a range of attractions and activities from the impressive Stonewall Farm to the Woodford Reserve which produces one of Kentucky’s finest bourbon whiskeys. Versailles’ beautiful landscapes also offer excellent hiking, horseback riding, and fishing.

1. Jack Jouett House Historic Site


Built in 1797, the Jack Jouett House Historic Site was once home to American Revolution hero Captain Jack Jouett, Jr., who served in both the Kentucky and Virginia general assemblies.

He was also part of the Constitutional Convention during which Kentucky became a state. The site today features a stone cabin from the 1780’s, which was converted by Jouett to a kitchen.

Tours are typically available on Saturdays, as well as Friday and Sunday afternoons. Tours of the Jack Jouett House Historic Site can also be scheduled by appointment. There is no admission fee to visit the site.

WinStar Farm is one of the leading Thoroughbred horse breeding and racing farm in Kentucky. Owned by Kenny Troutt, the farm has produced several Triple Crown and Derby-winning stallions, including Kentucky Derby champions Audible, Always Dreaming, Tiznow, and Yoshida. The vast state-of-the-art stallion complex collectively breeds over 2,500 mares a year with world-class stallions and offers guided tours of the farm, including the stallion barn and the breeding shed. Seasonal Shuttle Tours are conducted on electric shuttles to allow visitors to enjoy the scenic beauty of the huge farm in comfort.

3. Eckert's Orchard


Nestled among the beautiful rolling hills of Central Kentucky, Eckert's Orchard is a 60-acre, family-owned and operated farm that produces seasonal fruit and vegetables from May through November and offers U-pick days to the public. The farm produce blackberries, strawberries, apples, and peaches, as well as asparagus, pumpkins, and other seasonal vegetables, and has a Country Store that sells fresh produce, local jams, organic honey, homemade salsas, and a selection of delicious homemade bakery items, kitchen gadgets, and gifts. The quaint Apple Blossom Café serves a delicious farm-to-table lunch menu and a range of handmade treats.

4. Three Chimneys Farm


Three Chimneys Farm is an American Thoroughbred racehorse breeding farm in Midway owned by the Clay family. Established in 1972, the farm began as a small boarding stable for just nine mares and grew into one of the leading Thoroughbred racehorse breeding farms in Kentucky.

5. Wildside Winery


Wildside Winery is a craft winery that produces a selection of award-winning wines made with Estate and Kentucky-grown grapes. Established in 2004, the winery is set on 30 acres of beautiful landscapes just outside of Versailles in the heart of horse country and welcomes visitors for tours and tastings year-round. Wildside Winery produces award-winning Cabernet Franc, as well as their ‘Quartet’ blend which is made up of bourbon barrel-aged Cabernet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, and a semi-sweet Traminette white wine. The winery is also available for special events and functions like weddings.

Irish Acres Gallery of Antiques is a family-owned antique gallery that has been curating a selection of antiques from all periods for over 45 years. The three-generation antique gallery was established in 1974 by Bonnie and Arch Hannigan in a stall of their horse barn and has grown into one of the leading antique dealers in the state with a 32,000 square foot store selling a wealth of one-of-a-kind antiques, collectibles, vintage objects, and treasures. Downstairs from the gallery is the Glitz restaurant which offers a one-of-a-kind dining experience with old stone walls, elegant chandeliers, and twinkling fairy lights.

7. Woodford Theatre


Located inside the Falling Springs Recreation Center, the Woodford Theatre is a community center that presents an array of performances, plays, shows, and special events throughout the year. Established over 30 years ago, the theater supports local artists, actors, and theatrical performers and produces a range of local plays, including dramas, comedies, musicals, dance recitals, and other forms of artistic performance. The Woodford Theatre also offers a variety of acting classes and workshops for students of all ages, as well as educational programs, and summer camps.

8. Pin Oak Stud


Pin Oak Stud is a family-owned and operated Thoroughbred farm that rears and sells Thoroughbred stakes horses. Purchased in 1949 by Josephine Abercrombie and her father, the 1,348-acre farm in Woodford County was once a working farm that raised Simmental cattle and grew crops such as asparagus and tobacco. Josephine transformed the farm into an award-winning stud and Thoroughbred breeding farm that bred and raised champion racing horses. Pin Oak Stud offers guided tours of the farm which showcase the stables and the beautiful horses that call the farm home.

9. Bluegrass Scenic Railroad and Museum


The Bluegrass Scenic Railroad and Museum is a traveling museum dedicated to the history of the Bluegrass Railroad and the rail transport industry in the region. Based in Woodford County Park, the mobile museum was founded in 1976 by members of the Bluegrass Railroad Club and offers visitors a unique experience that delves into the history of the railroad on an 11-mile round trip excursion. The train journey travels through the beautiful horse farms of Kentucky to Young's High Bridge in the town of Tyrone, where passengers can disembark and soak up spectacular views of the Kentucky River valley area.

10. Wallace Station Deli and Bakery


Located along Old Frankfort Pike in the heart of Kentucky’s Bluegrass horse country, Wallace Station Deli and Bakery is a beautifully preserved example of a small railroad community. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a surviving example of a small railroad community. Wallace Station Deli and Bakery is a locally owned country store that serves delicious homemade food with locally sourced ingredients from the lush surrounding farmlands and wine country. 11. Woodford Reserve Distillery


Woodford Reserve Distillery is an award-winning distillery that produces a range of whiskeys, including limited-edition releases like the Kentucky-only Distillery Series. Established by Elijah Pepper in 1812, the distillery is one of the oldest distilleries in Kentucky and is listed as a National Historic Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places. Formerly known as the Old Oscar Pepper Distillery, and later the Labrot & Graham Distillery, the distillery produces several whiskeys including Woodford Reserve Bourbon, Woodford Reserve Straight Rye Whiskey, Woodford Reserve Double Oaked, and Woodford Reserve Wheat Whiskey. Visitors can enjoy guided tours and tastings at the facility which is eight miles from Versailles.

12. The Kentucky Castle


Situated in the “horse farm country” of Kentucky, The Kentucky Castle has become a famous landmark in Versailles and was originally built to be a private residence. Visitors can tour the grounds and the castle itself by making a reservation, which can also include either lunch or dinner during their visit. Special events, such as dinner theater experiences and Bourbon tastings, are held at The Kentucky Castle throughout the year. The Kentucky Castle also strives to produce as much food as possible that’s served at the Castle Farms restaurant and aims to create an authentic farm experience.
